Found the model answers: If x axis is at ground level, and y axis is through max height then equation is y = -0.0286(x-7)²+3.2 If the origin point is at the highest vertex, then equation is y = -0.0286x². Total length = 17.58m Correct working for one section can provide a1 evidence. But I still don't understand how the final answer was calculated...

if the y axis is through the highest point (the vertex) then by haveing (x-7)^2, it contradicts itself

y=a(x-7)^2 + 3.2 The point (0,1.8) is on the parabola. Use it to calculate a which is -1/35. So y = -1/35(x-7)^2 + 3.2. When the shot put is back on the ground, y will be 0 so write 0 = -1/35(x-7)^2 +3.2 and solve for x as follows: -3.2 = -1/35(x-7)^2 Multiply both sides by -35 and get (x-7)^2 = 112. Take the square root of both sides and get x - 7 = +/-10.58. Of course we want the positive one so x = 17.58 when y = 0 ie the shot is back on the ground.
