what's a covalent and an ionic bond?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an ionic bond is also known as electrovalent bond well, the ionic bond is when an cation which attain its ionizing energy and dontaes e away and the anion which is e deficit and receive e. the interaction between the cation and anion forms an electrostatic force and forming a ionic bond. well probably you say why since the ions are attracting each other why it just stop and both the ion didnt blend together? well when the ion come so close to each other there comes the e-e repulsion. ok about covalent bond it just only about non metal and non metal. oh ya ionic is between metal and non metal! for example if you are saying H2 molecule you cant say it is ionic compound you see H --> H+ + e and H +e --> H- the H- ion is right because it becomes isoelectric to helium ( acheive stable electron arrangement) but! how on earth that in same condition and same temperature that the H can do the 2 reaction together? that is impossible! so lewis suggested that there is e sharing rather than e donation! so this is covalent bond there is more deeper information about covalent but its too long .... hope it is helpful

hey the guy on top i think you have the wrong concept metallic elements is metallic bond and ionic is when the combination of metal and non metal read my ans above fro better understanding
