ok..have a question. in front of me i have some questions and the periodic table. the question asks me to write the formula for the following compund: Tin (II) fluoride....i want to know how i am supposed to do that?? i am terrible at chemistry of any form, and would like to learn how to do it correctly...would love help, thanks. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the name of the compound, tin(II) fluoride tells you how to write it. Tin(II) means that the tin ion is carrying a +2 charge. Fluorine on the periodic table is one column short of neon, group 17, ergo it usually carries a -1 charge. Much like a dosing table, the periodic table will tell all once you can read it.

OpenStudy (preetha):

That is a good response Jetzt. GothNurse, you will need a periodic table. Tin has the symbol Sn, Floride is F. Tin (II) tells you that the charge on the Tin is +2, Since the charge on a Fluoride is -1, You will need 2 F to balance the Sn+2. So you get, SnF2.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Try Iron (III) Oxide.

Thank you Preetha, I do try to explain things clearly.
