The amount of work done by two boys who apply 240 N of force in an unsuccessful at- tempt to move a stalled car is 1. 480 N · m. 2. 480 N. 3. 240 N · m. 4. 0. 5. 240 N.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

By definition Work = (Force) x (Displacement in direction of applied force) In this case, the boys apply a force, but the displacement from that force is zero, hence Work = (142 N) x (0 m) = 0 N.m = 0 J , by definition of Joules, J = N.m

yes the ans is definitely zero but let me explained it in detail why boys get tired though the work done is still zero actually work is not zero to be precise but they all go some in elastic potential energy of body and some doing work against friction but the net displacement is zero but there energy is consumed as said above and W=∫F.Ds not able to write vector sign sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!
