Any of you familiar with Avogadro Goes to Court- Case Study? I have to calculate the cost in dollars of a single aluminum atom in the roll of aluminum foil. The roll cost is $1.59, and the area of the roll is 6.96 square metres. And I am given approximately 20.0 cm by 20.0 cm (8 inch by 8 inch) section of the roll that I have cut out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Avogardro's number is 6.02 x 10^23

My answer should be correct to three significant figures and should be reported using scientific notation. So all of the details of my calculation, including a complete dimensional analysis. HELP!! D;

OpenStudy (jfraser):

You need the cost PER ATOM, so you need to know the total # of atoms. 1) You will need the MASS of the sample you have cut. 2) Find the MOLES of aluminum in the sample you have cut (using molar mass) 3) Use avogadro's # to find the #OF ATOMS in the sample you have cut. 4) Find the % of the piece you have cut in relation to the whole roll. 5) Find the COST of that %. 6) Find the cost PER ATOM based on #5/#3. profit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh.. to calculate the mass, I use m = sample mass (g) n = moles (mol) M = molar mass (g/mol) m = n x M

OpenStudy (jfraser):

or a scale, since you won't know moles without mass.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a scale?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

weigh the piece of aluminum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I can't..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't have a special scale that can weight an aluminum foil..

OpenStudy (jfraser):

Surely in your classroom there is a balance that can weigh a small object like a square of aluminum foil. If you cannot, then this problem cannot be solved. You MUST have mass to find moles using molar mass. Without that piece of information, this is just a mental exercise. The conversions can all be setup, but without the mass it cannot be completed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh.. i think we do have a balance, thank you!!

OpenStudy (jfraser):

yw

4) Find the % of the piece you have cut in relation to the whole roll?
