A user is constructing an ionic bond between beryllium and chlorine and has reached the stage below. What should the user do next? A. Transfer an electron from the beryllium atom to the chlorine atom. B. Transfer an electron from the chlorine atom to the beryllium atom. C. Add another beryllium atom. D. Add another chlorine atom.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Zagamo, what is an ionic bond? What happens?

I think you should ask it in the chemistry study group...

Determine which atom has the highest energy state electron, i.e. who has the e- in the highest valence orbital? Or another way to look at it, which one has an odd number or e- in the outer most shell? Or to make it more simple, in an ionic bond the atom on the left side of the periodic table will donate an e- to the atom on the right side of the periodic table. Thus, Be would give an e- to Cl.
