a student must prepare 25.00mL of 0.20M HCl for use in an experimnt. Th only solution available is labled 0.75 M HCl. How much of the stock solution should th studnt use in the preparation of the acid required for the experiment?

C1 is the concentration of a species in the first solution V1 is the volume of the first solution C2 is the concentration of the same species in the second solution V2 is the volume of the second solution \[C_1V_1=C_2V_2 \rightarrow V_1=\frac{C_2V_2}{C_1}\]\[V_1=\frac{(0.20M)(25.00mL)}{0.75M}=6.6667mL\ HCl \approx6.7mL\ HCl \]

i thought v1 is the 25ml...so we are trying to find v2

Mathematically, it doesn't matter. However, the 0.20M is the solution the student is trying to MAKE, therefore it would be the second solution. You can solve for V_2 similarly and you'll get the same answer.
