An elevator is moving upward at a uniform speed 0.40 m s 0 v = . Suddenly a bolt detaches from the ceiling and starts to fall. How long will it take the bolt fall on the floor of elevator if the height of cabin is h = 2m?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In the above question v0 is 0.40m/s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just apply normal equation of motion. Observe with respect to lift. initial velocity = 0.4 m/s downwards. acceleration downwards = g. Apply equation of motion and see if you get there.

I have but unfortunately i have it wrong and i dont really get it. i seem to have trouble with motion questions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Relative to the person outside the Elevator the time of bolt fallen is 0.2 sec but relative to the person inside the Elevator the time taken will be 0.204 sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That answer is correct but how have you managed to get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As per special relativity postulate 2, physics law will be same in all frames, so the bolt will fall on the ground with a speed of 9.8m/s but relative to the observer outside person will see that the elevator is moving up with a speed of 0.4 m/s, so he will see the speed of bolt (9.8+0.4)m/s, so by dividing the height of elevator by speed we will get the actual time taken by bolt

what procedure did u take. Please write it down as i may find this kind of question in exam soon.
