The refractive index of a diamond is 2.42. Given that the speed of light in a vaccuum is 3.0*10^8m/s.If the light that passes through the diamond has a frequency of 4.2*10^14 Hz. Calculate (i)its wavelength in the vacuum (ii)its wavelength in the diamond The wavelength and frequency is altered when it enters the diamond

Why did you just top post this question when I had already written a response?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The frequency is fundamental quantity and it does not depend on any medium.hence in your first question we calculate the wavelength of light in vacuum very easily by apply the fundamental formula i.e\[\lambda=velocity/ \nu\].in the second question the velocity of light in diamond is less than 3*10^8m/sec due to it is denser medium with respect to vacuum.the wavelength decreases \[\mu\] times i.e \[\lambda' =\lambda \div \mu.\] and you apply these formula and get the answer .
