the idea behind the principle of uniformitarianism states that the processes that are happening today have happened in the past also (and will continue to happen in the future). therefore, catastrophic events, such as meteorite impacts, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes have happened in the past, and are also happening today (and will happen in the future as well).
