The easiest way is to change the decimal number to hex or octal first. for example, 100 decimal in hex : 16*16= 256 is too big. so divide by 16 6 remainder 4 100 decimal = 64 hex now the 6 represents 4 binary bits 0110 and the 4 is 0100 answer 100 decimal = 1100100 binary

If you are doing it by computer, than find the highest power of 2 that divides into the decimal and go from there.
