it's okay, thank you so much! one more question, to mulitply (1/2)x^(-1/2) do I need a common denom. for both parts of the problem as well?

You can re-write it as x^(-1/2)/2 Then you can re-write it as 1/2(x^(1/2)) Something to the power 1/2 is just the square root of something. So: 1/2sqrt(x)

Oh boy did I screw up on the original problem. I dunno what I was thinking, but you can't add exponents when you're adding two terms together. You only add them when you're multiplying. I steered you wrong and I am very sorry for that :-(
