All you do is plug in x = whatever wherever you see an x. So, for f(1) you are doing it for x = 1. So, plug in 1 everywhere you see an x: \[(3(1)^2-4(1)+1)/(3(1)-1)=(3-4+1)/(3-1)=0/2=0\]
