@karatechopper ask!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

ok so i have this word problem and i have it half done and i got stuck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

... post the problem

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

A triangle has an are of 77 square inches. Find the length of the base if the base is 3 inches more than the height

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

*area

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

okay... see the area of any triangle is A = 1/2 x (height) x (base) let the height be 'k'. then base = k+3 so, (1/2 )(k) (k+3) = 77 can you solve that now??

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

ok good just what i got!

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

what have you gotten for the answer?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

hmm.. now i think you got stuck?? okay listen now.. multiply both sides by 2.... then simplify the LHS. and bring every term to the left side. you 'll find you have a very familiar kind of quadratic equation.. solve for 'k' if still having problems, i ll show how to solve it

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

plz do show how u r gonna solve it

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

okay you have an answer? post what you got. i ll verify it for you!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

okay there it goes....|dw:1332799036998:dw| so, i get k+14=0 and k-11=0 so k= -14 or 11 NOW... length of a side cannot be *negative*. so "-14" CANNOT be a possible solution. so k=11 only now base was (k+3)... since we assumed k is the height. so, base= 11+3 = 14
