First one, if 5cos(x) =5/2, then cos(x)=1/2. Can't remember my trigonometric circle by heart, but I bet you have that lying around somewhere on your desk

So cos x = 1/2 which indicates x= pi/3, 5pi/3, 7pi/3, or 11pi/3

Remember that cos x = 1/2 comes from a 30/60/90 triangle.

there are 2 values between 0 and 2pi where cos(x) = 1/2, pi/3 and 5pi/3. To find the values for 2pi to 4pi, you just add 2pi to those first values

pi/3 is in quadrant one; 5pi/3 is in quadrant four. 7pi/3 and 11pi/3 are on the second lap, since we are going for theta in [0,4pi]

Steps for my solution of problem two above: 1. Problem statement. 2. Substitute definition of csc. 3. Rephrase argument of radical as single rational expression. 4. 1- sin^2 = cos^2 then argument is cot^2 5. Square root of cot^2 is cot.

The argument is the value or expression you put into the function, radical, absolute value, etc.

Good catch. The function is negative in the second quadrant, and the answer is positive, so we need the negative sign to make it all play nice.
