Two boats start their journey from the same point A and travel along directions AC and AD, as shown below. What is the distance, CD, between the boats? 115.5 ft 213.2 ft 230.9 ft 346.4 ft

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tan(30) = BD/300 tan(60) = BC/300 BD-BC = CD

OpenStudy (phi):

Are you studying trig? if so, sheena's answer is a good way. If you are studying special 30-60-90 triangles, then notice that triangle ABD is one of them. So you should be able to find leg AD: it is sqrt(3)*legAB Triangle ABC is also a 30-60-90 triangle, so you should be able to find leg BC. BC is AB/sqrt(3) Now you can find the distance between C and D. BD-BC

@iambatman @IMStuck can you help me find the answer to this please

OpenStudy (imstuck):

I can help you. Let me draw it out to show you step by step, ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please :)

OpenStudy (imstuck):

|dw:1406486912705:dw|Find x first. Do this by using the cos of 60 degrees. Like this:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im understanding so far

OpenStudy (imstuck):

tangent is the side opposite over the side adjacent so we will use the 600 + whatever the other distance is and find the whole distance BD by solving for y now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im trying to process this one second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok how do we solve for y

OpenStudy (imstuck):

So the length of BD is the value for x + the value for y: 600 + (-80.3848)=> 600-80.3848=519.6152

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but that is not one of the answer choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@IMStuck

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Oh boy then I have to redo. Hold on...sorry.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Duh...that's cuz I used cos in the first step and I should have used tangent! My fault!!! Redo! I'm going to delete the drawings and start over. So dumb...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you are not dumb lol

OpenStudy (imstuck):

|dw:1406487718098:dw|

OpenStudy (imstuck):

NOW let's do this right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!!
