The pair of elements that forms the LEAST polar bond is a. Na and Cl c. S and Cl b. N and Cl d. Si and Cl The answer is B, can anyone explain why? Thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it would be A seeing how NaCl form an ionic bond...

Wait the choices run a,c,b,d. Which one is b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

N and Cl. Sorry, the answer choices are messed up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Na + Cl is going to be VERY polar since the electron will become essentially part of the C. S + Cl will share the electrons slightly unevenly as Cl "wants" the electron more than S. Since N + Cl have different numbers of electrons to acquire, the electrons will gravitate more towards Cl since it is more massive in size comparison and needs only one electron (thus the Z effect or effect of the nucleus will become stronger and pull the electrons closer to Cl).

Does this have to do with the different charges?

OpenStudy (mos1635):

deferance in electronegativity more likely

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Thanks.
