An image of an ice cream cone is shown below. The slant height of the cone itself is 4 inches, and the radius of the ice cream scoop on top is 0.75 inches. What is the approximate surface area of the entire ice cream cone with the scoop of ice cream? Answer 3.6π square inches 4.1π square inches 4.7π square inches 5.8π square inches

Once again your answer has to be in terms of π, so don't multiply it A = area of cone (without the top circular part) + area of semi-sphere (without the circular bottom) A = π*r*s + (1/2)*(4/3)π(r^2) s=4 factor out π, and get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well i did it and got like 5.24 idk what i am doingg.

Directrix (directrix):

(1/2)*(4/3)π(r^2) --> This looks like a mixture of the volume of a sphere formula and the surface area formula. The surface area of a sphere is 4 pi r^2 and then you have to take half that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = π*r*s + (1/2)*(4)π(r^2) Yeah I put the volume formula by mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm getting 4.125π which doesn't seem to match any of your answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should i go with 4.1 then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I didn't see the digits before the dot...yeah 4.1 is correct

Directrix (directrix):

Lateral Area of Cone = pi r L where r is the radius of the circular base and L is the slant height LA of Cone = pi (.75) (4) = 3 pi ------------ Lateral Area of Hemisphere = (1/2) 4 pi r^2 = 2 pi (.75)^2 = 1.125 pi ------------------- Area of Cone and Ice Cream = 3 pi + 1.125 pi = 4.125 pi

thank you ! : )
