when im taking the derivative of a log or ln function can i expand or compress the log before i apply the chain rule?

sometimes it's best to expand..sometimes best to compress...but generally yes you can
lnx^1\[\left( d/dx \right)\ln(x ^{1/4}) could i make that (d/dx) 1/4lnx\]

hmmm i dont think you can...you have to do it the right way...guess i was thinking abt a different thing when i said you can
well i guess ill just do both and see if the same answer comes out
