Identify the 27th term of an arithmetic sequence where a1 = 38 and a17 = –74

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The process: A geometric sequence means that the general term is given by the following expression for some constant \(C\). \[\Huge a_n=a_1\cdot C^{n−1}\] Use this information to reason out the value of \(C\) (the ratio between terms), and plug in \(n=27\).

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yakeyglee: this is an arithmetic sequence, so the formula for the n'th term is:\[a_n=a_1+(n-1)d\]where \(a_1\) is the first term and \(d\) is the common difference between each term.
