What is the chemical equation for the reaction of hydrochloric acid with water?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Isn't Hydrochloric acid cholrine concentrated in water already....I could be wrong its been awhile or is chlorine in water bleach HCL hydro chlorine gas disolved in water hmmm wouldn't that be HCLO??? hmmmm guess somebody else will have to answer HCL --> H20 ~HCLO with only one oxygen radical being consumed with an oppistiely charged free free radical or is it HOCLO doubt that I choose the first option. grain of salt with this grain of salt I"m mearly a curious chemist

OpenStudy (btaylor):

I'm pretty sure that it is simply: \[HCl \rightarrow H ^{+}+Cl^{-}\] Because hydrochloric acid is a strong acid, and it fully dissociates in water. The equation is for the ionization of HCl.
