Lim->0 F(x+h)-f(x)/h Given the flowing function f(x)=x^2-3x+1

Determine the derivative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so for limits, what you have to do is plug in. and somehow get rid of the h on the bottom. so what you have is: lim, as h->0 ((x+h)^2 - 3(x+h) + 1) - x^2-3x +1 all divided by h. expand the numerator. what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f9(x+0)-x^2-3x+1/0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, don't plug in h = 0 yet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because when you expand the numerator, what you get is something in terms of h and x. Then you can factor out the h from it. and that cancels out with the h in the denominator. This way you're left with something in terms of just x. :)
