A wooden pyramid, 6 inches tall, has a square base. A carpenter increases the dimensions of the wooden pyramid by a factor of 3 and makes a larger pyramid with the new dimensions. Describe in complete sentences the ratio of the volumes of the two pyramids.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since the area of a pyramid is the area of the base * height * (1/3). If we assume that one of the sides is an isosceles triangle, the base is equal to the height.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The area of the base is roughly what kind of function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure what level of math this is for but there are a few ways to analyze this.

geometry honors

Ok, well a brute force analysis is pretty elementary to do. The base is square, if you presume a face is an isosceles triangle, then half the length of the base is equal to the height. Plug that into the formula for the volume of a pyramid.

so what would be your final answer be ?
