Name the following compound. CH-CH-CH-CH-O-C6H5 a. cyclohexylbutyl ether b. butylcyclohexyl ether c. phenylbutyl ether d. butylphenyl ether
Can you draw it?
that might help you name it :)
and do you mean CH3-CH2-CH2-C2H-O-C6H5
I can't really draw it. and how it's written is how it is.
This formula doesn't make sense: CH-CH-CH-CH-O-C6H5 These carbons are missing bonds
you're tellin me.
well I would just assume that they forgot to number the hydrogens, why cant you draw it? Just remember each carbon needs 4 bonds
im having a lot of trouble with organic chem.
You really shouldn't naming is very systematic and easy, can you at least try drawing CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-O-C6H5 The only reason I ask you to is because it will help you to realize something about the molecule that will help you name it
meh, do you recognize what C6H5 is?
|dw:1345607950116:dw|
it is a benzene ring
well C6H5 is phenyl. thats all i know.
well think about this logically what is normally the suffix when naming the shorter carbon chain or the longer carbon chain
because you have a butyl chain and a phenyl ring connected by an ether functional group
so really it is either c or d
meh, it is d because the phenyl group has more carbons that then the butyl group so we have butylphenyl ether
I would recommend reviewing naming rules this site seems ok http://butane.chem.uiuc.edu/cyerkes/Chem104A_BFA05/Genchemref/nomenclature_rules.html
just practice a lot and it will become second nature
thank you so much.
