Problem 1: The melting points of canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and peanut oil are 10°C, –11°C, –17°C, and –2°C. Based on this information, how might you separate one type of oil from the rest in a mixture of all four? a. cooling in a freezer b. liquid chromatography c. simple distillation d. paper chromatography
PRoblem 2: Which of the following is a mixture? a. oxygen b. air c. nitrogen d. carbon dioxide ***I think it is AIR (B) am i right on this one??
I'd use a freezer. Check frequently to separate solid from liquid, one at a time, as they reach their freezing points, lowest to highest.
SO i'll just enter those two for now, so things don't get confusing :) hahaa
Oh... couldn't problem 1's answer also be simple distillation??
@hba?? what do u think??
I think i am sleepy
or are the boiling points not separated enough??? so it has to be cooling in a freezer???
lol
Yes cooled in a freezer
okay...and what about problem 2?
Do you know soil is a mixture
yeah... so is AIR the answer??
since it is made up of different components???
Yes air is a mixture You dont have to explain me things
@hba and here is another problem.... Problem 3: Which method would you use to separate silt from water a. filtration b. gas chromatography c. distillation d. electrolysis ****I think it is A. filtration... am i right?? Oh and yeah sorry! but yay!! I was right :)
Yeah right
Oh and Problem 4: In a paper chromatography chamber, which of the following could be the mobile phase? a. paper b. air c. alcohol d. plastic plate **I think it is C. alcohol :) And yay!! :)
@hba and problem 5: Ali runs a paper chromatography experiment using the same ink, but three different solvents. Solvent A separates the components into three bands, solvent B separates it into two bands, and solvent C does not separate the ink. What should Ali conclude? A. Solvent A was the best mobile phase. B. The ink was a pure substance. C. The ink was a mixture, but only in solvents A and B. D. Solvent C was a good mobile phase. ***I think the answer to this one is A. Solvent A was the best mobile phase.... Am i right?? :)
Alcohol (it climbs up the paper)
cool! did i get problem 5 right?
Solvent A was the best mobile phase
Yay! and i don't get this one... Problem 6: Acetylene burns in oxygen and produces carbon dioxide, water, heat, and light. Which of the following statements is true? A. Acetylene and oxygen changed chemically and released energy. B. Acetylene and oxygen changed physically and released energy. C. Acetylene and oxygen changed chemically and absorbed energy. D. Acetylene and oxygen changed physically and absorbed energy.
@hba... do you understand that one??
nvm thanks for all the help tho! :)
