what do fronts and air masses have in common

OpenStudy (haltiamali):

A large body of air with the same temperature, pressure, and humidity is called an air mass. Air masses are produced when air remains over one part of the Earth’s surface for a long time. These great air masses move slowly across the Earth’s surface. These moving air masses take on the characteristics of the surface beneath them. Air moving over a warm surface is warmed, and air moving over a cold surface is cooled. Air moving over water becomes moist, and air moving over land becomes drier. As it moves, the air mass causes changes in the weather of an area. A front is a line or boundary between air masses. The passage of a front usually produces changes in temperature, pressure, wind speed and direction, and humidity. The air masses clash along the front, so weather along a front is often stormy. A cold front occurs when a cold air mass replaces a warm air mass. Weather along a cold front often includes thunderstorms with much precipitation. A warm front occurs when a warm air mass replaces a cold air mass. Precipitation may also occur along a warm front, but the precipitation is usually not as heavy as along a cold front. A stationary front occurs when air masses meet without moving. A stationary front may produce an extended period of precipitation.
