Helium melts at –272°C. Which of the following statements is true? A. Helium atoms stop moving when they change from gas to liquid. B. Helium solidifies close to absolute zero. C. Helium solidifies below absolute zero. D. You could use helium to cool an object to absolute zero. ***My answer: B. helium solidifies close to absolute zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuz it cannot solidify BELOW absolute zero right?? is my answer right?? is it B??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

C is false because you can't go below absolute zero (it's the lowest you can go)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mhmm I'm following so far :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A is also false because if the atoms stopped moving (and I mean truly stopped moving), then you'd be absolute zero

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but the atoms wouldn't form a gas or a liquid (because both have moving atoms)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mhmm :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk and what about D?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

idk about D but....if you convert -272 C to kelvin, you'll get 1.15 K, which is very close to 0 K, or absolute zero

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

since the melting point is -272 C, this means it becomes a solid at temps below -272 C or 1.15 K

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so B looks like it's it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so yes?? the answer is B?? based on everything u said above? :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes i'd go with B, not entirely sure about D though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay :) i'll go with B :) thank you for all the explanations!! :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i'd say it's false, but not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay :) cool!! sounds good i'll go with B!! :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) thx

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
