how can you graph absolute value functions without calculators or plotting points?

Use the basic shape (a "V") that goes through the points (0,0), (1,1) and (-1,1) and transformations (shifting up/down, left/right, reflections, stretches and compressions)

a parabola is not the same thing as an absolute value: \(\large y = x^2\) is the parabola, the "U" shape) \(\large y = \vert x\vert\) is the "V" shape. Both of these basic graphs have the same 3 starting points (0,0), (1,1) and (-1,1). But the points are connected with a different shape.
