plz help Which type of compound usually has higher melting points: ionic compounds or covalent compounds? What is the reason for this difference in melting points? (3 points)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101118060618AAMY0Ss compares bond force(between 2 ions) with inter-molecular force in covalent compounts and it so confuses :s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like, to melt something, do we need to supply heat such that it breaks chemical bonds between atoms (or) just breaking the inter-molecular force is sufficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

usually covalent because you have to heat them to excite the electrons also covalent are more stable so it talkes a lot more energy to break covalent bonds
