How do we predict hybridisation of a central metal ion when there is a mix of strong field and weak field ligands approaching it?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

What do you mean by hybridization? Are you referring to its Crystal field splitting??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean that, even if we use Valence Bond theory, we could still derive a few results from the spectrochemical series, right? As in, the order of strength of the ligands. Stronger ones form low spin complexes and weaker ones form high spin. At least that's what I was taught. in that case, how do I determine whether it will be a d2sp3 or sp3d2?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well that all dtepends on its geometry and structure whether trigonal or square planar, etc. But yes' weak field = high spin and strong field = low spin
