A high school student working part-time as a pizza delivery man had a gross income of $6324 last year. If his federal tax rate was 10% and his state tax rate was 4.2%, what was the amount withheld from his pay last year in federal tax, state tax, and FICA combined?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the tax rate, they are two separate things. The right answer in real life is taking .0765 x 6324 because a high school student would not pay income tax, or in any case the standard deduction if they did their own return would lower the tax to zero, or close to it. If this is a math question, then take (10.0 + .0765 + .042) x 6324, and even that is wrong because FICA is not "withheld.
