If xy = 0 then x must be equal to 0 is the counterexample. Basically, one of the variables has to equal zero.

the answer above is not correct a counter-example demonstrates that the sentence is false according to the statement we have that xy=0 -> y=0 so are there any cases, values for x and y (with y not =0), such that xy=0? find a value of x that makes this statement true, that is your counterexample
