A 0.09 kg bullet is fired from a 64 kg rifle with a muzzle speed of 300 m/s. What is the speed of the rifle recoil?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that one heavy rifle!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the bullet's not so small either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just a problem given by prof -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solution is conservation of momentum ie the momentum of the discharged bullet is equal to the momentum of the rifle. right??

OpenStudy (ghazi):

under ideal conditions you are supposed to obey conservation of linear momentum so based on that , momentum of bullet = momentum of rifle due to recoil speed \[0.09*300=64*v\] therefore \[v=\frac{ 0.09*300 }{ 64 } m/s\]
