M.C. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist. His artwork is very popular in the mathematical world. Many of his works are made of tessellations − a tiling of a shape with no gaps or overlaps covering an entire plane. The simplest way to create a tessellation is to trace the tile shape on paper over and over again, creating a pattern. Jamie wants to create a tessellation on a square poster board that has an area of 64 in2. The tile he is tracing is a square with a length of 2 inches. How many rows and columns of this tile will he have on his tessellation?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

First you need to find the side length of the square poster board. Let this length = x inches. Then the area of the poster board = x^2 = 64 \[x ^{2}=64\] \[x=\sqrt{64}=? \ inches\]
