Which chemical equation is correctly balanced? 1) Na + O2  Na2O 2) Na + O2  2 Na2O 3) 2 Na + 2 O2  2 Na2O 4) 4 Na + O2  2 Na2O thanks in advance ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry this is in math :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is number 4 and lol yea u should of asked this in the chem section but that's ok i do chem in school :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all you do is make sure both sides of the equation have equal amounts of each element, understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I kind of understand waht you are saying...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like count the amount of Na & O atoms there r on both sides, For example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For number 1, the left hand side as 1 Na atom and 2 Oxygen atoms while the right side of the equation has 2 Na atoms and 1 O atom. Therefore they rnt balanced cause they rnt equal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so each side has to be balanced in order to answer this question correctly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for number 4, there r 4 Na atoms and 2 Oxy atoms on both sides of the reaction arrow so the equation is balenced cause both sides have equal amounts of atoms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so would it be...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, cause one side has 2 sodium atoms where as the other has only 1. Therfore they rnt balanced

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

D. 4 Na and 2 O at both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But none of them have o2 all of them are 2o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i agree with u @e.cociuba :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but that is 4Na vs. 2Na

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

Equation 4. The atoms on both sides are equal. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill explain now

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

Haha finally someone does...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4 Na + O _{2} ---> 2 Na _{2}O\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So d: 4 Na + O2 -> 2 Na2O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok thanks ;)

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

"Ya Buddy"... U got it.. But do u understand y??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you agree or disagree with some of my other answers? Just two more.

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

Shoot em! :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not so much but at least I can figure it out a little

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just don't quite understand why 4Na changes to 2Na

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

Ok we will help u understand w/ the other's...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1363902560450:dw|2 wat you do is multiply the big 2 by the subscript numbers by Na and O
