hi! How are ionic and covalent bonding similar? How are they different? You should discuss how they bond and what the major differences are in their nomenclature (the way they are named).

mathslover (mathslover):

Ionic bonds : the electrons are traded completely between the ions while in the covalent bonds : the electrons are shared

mathslover (mathslover):

Covalent bonds have \(low\) polarity while Ionic bonds have \(high\) polarity .

mathslover (mathslover):

@missy101 let us discuss about the formation now.

mathslover (mathslover):

First point is that covalent bonds are formed between two non metals having similar electronegativities

mathslover (mathslover):

They share the \(e^-\) to stabilize themselves.

mathslover (mathslover):

@missy101 Now think of a compound which is formed between non - metals having similar electronegativities

mathslover (mathslover):

I would give you an example : \(HCl\) . Both are non - metals and have similar electronegativities .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks, what are the main difference/reasoning in the way theyre named??
