How do i name this compound: Cu(NO3)2 ?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

copper & nitrate. Now, you need to figure out the oxidation state. You can do this by setting up an easy algebra expression. x + 2(-1) = 0 x = oxidation state the 2(-1) is TWO nitrate ions which both carry a -1 charge. and the = 0 is because the whole compound itself is NEUTRAL (meaning it carries no charge). Now, if you solve for "x". That's your oxidation state. And hence, you have: Copper (___) nitrate
