the slope formula is 

$$m = \frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{2}}$$

so using your information you will have 

$$m = \frac{9 - 5}{3 - (-7)} $$

when you evaluate the slope you will have the rate of change in the trail.

well when you simplify 4/10... there is a common factor of 2 in the numerator and denominator
