please help can sb explain why some molecules are dissolved in water and others not and why some take longer time to dissolve ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Water is polar. It is a great solvent, but substances that water dissolves must be either polar or charged ionic compounds, made from negatively and positively charged atoms. Polar water attracts polar molecules and ions and pushes out non-polar and non-charged substances.

Thnx for the help but y does some elements take more time to dissolve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The rate of dissolution depends on a number of factors: nature of the solvent and solute temperature (and to a small degree pressure) degree of undersaturation presence of mixing interfacial surface area presence of inhibitors (e.g., a substance adsorbed on the surface).
