Which is the most volatile substance? Chlorine, fluorine, sodium chloride or sodium fluoride?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

what u think @amsterdam11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, I reckon it's not sodium chloride or sodium fluoride because there would be big electro negativity differences that attract them to each other so there would be dipole dipole bonding between them.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

mean they are ionic compounds will be sold at room temperature ur right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think we are looking for the one with the lowest bp and with van der walls forces?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I can't tell whether it would be chlorine or fluorine

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

BP of Cjhlorine is -34 °C BP of Fluorine is -188 °C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be fluorine? But how do you know which one if you don't know their bps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh so bps increas down group 7 on the periodic table?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

as u come from top to bottom the vandewaals force of attraction between the molecules increases :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

bcoz the size of atoms formed in the respective molecules also increases Yw
