A metal weighing 7.101 g is placed in a graduated cylinder containing 33.0 mL of water. The water rose to the 37.4 mL mark. a) calculate the density of the metal (in g/mL). b) If the metal had been aluminum (d= 2.7 g/mL) how high would the water have risen?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

37.4 ml minus 33.0 = 4.4 mL Mass = 7.101 gm density = 7.101 gm/ 4.4 ml = 1.614 gm / ml If this were aluminum (2.7 gm/ml), 7.101 gm would displace (7.101 / 2.7 or 2.63) ml of water. This would cause the water level in the graduated cylinder to rise to 35.63 ml. (33 ml + 2.63 ml = 35.63 ml)
