why half filled, empty and completely filled orbitals are more stable

Half-filled orbitals are particularly stable because all of the electrons in the orbital have the same spin. I don't know of a simple explanation for why full shells are any more stable than a shell with one less than the full number of electrons, but it takes a bit of an energy jump to start the next shell.
