how to distinguish between an inverse and power of -1? Ex. tan^-1 x it is inverse or power -1 which are cot x

OpenStudy (waynex):

The assumption is that the inverse trig function is meant since it is far and away more common. If raising to the -1 power is intended, extra care should be taken to ensure that meaning is conveyed, such as in \[\left( \tan(x) \right)^{-1}.\]
