How do you find out the amount of valence electrons on the d-block?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You can look at the periodic table as well as the charge for the given metal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many valence electrons would gold have then?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Gold is a bit complicated becuase not only does it have d-electrons, but it also has f-orbital electrons. Does that make sense? Once you move down first row metals, it gets a bit more complex. does that make sense. But it has 10 d-orbital electrons in it's valence shell.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that's what im confused on. how do you figure it out or is it impossible?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It's not impossible, but you should just sort of recognize that the last two usually have d\(^{10}\) configuration and s\( ^1\) meaning one electron in the s-orbital.
