OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

why does Magnesium and Copper can't react with Sodium hydroxide ?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

@Nurali , @chmvijay ,

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

I found info on the internet that says Mg and Cu does reacts with NaOH and Doesn't ... I'm kinda confused... but ma teacher said that the elements of the 1st 2 groups doesn't react with basses like NaOH... What is the correct piece of info here ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you look at the reactivity series .. you will find that ... sodium is more reactive than magnesium .. so it cannot .. displace sodium ... there fore magnesium cannot react with naoh ..

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

but the problem is they say they don't reacts with bases... sodium hydroxide is only an example ... wt about other basses ... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is true that Mg and Cu cant react with NaOH for they are less reactive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so blaze i am right :P ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see all these are displacement reactions ... if a certain metal such as mg is strong enough to displace the other metal in .... an aqueous solution then ... it will react .. other wise not ....

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

but Al does reacts with NaOH ... Al is below Mg in the reactivity series

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is so.

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

y does that theory of the reactivity series ignored when it comes to Al ?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because aluminium is an amphoteric metal .. which means it can react with both acid and alkali

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chemistry has many exceptions an you should know it

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

so... metals can't reacts with bases and non- metals can't reacts with acids in general ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

generally yes .. but specifically .... no ..

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

thank u guys.. :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

looking forward to more of your questions ....... in chemistry .. and i will surely ask physics questions :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For example, if HNO3 reacts with sulfur (S) it gives nitric oxide, water and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). ... this is an exception ... of non metals reacting with acids ..
