Will a reaction between HCl and copper metal produce copper (II) chloride or copper (III) chloride?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RANE ?

@skullpatrol ?

@terenzreignz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my guess is copper (II) chloride because the limiting reagent is HCl

OpenStudy (rane):

yh its will be Cu2Cl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

under what conditions would it be CuCl3 ?

OpenStudy (rane):

its usually due to the two possible 'oxidation state numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what makes copper take the 3 oxidation state instead of the 2 oxidation state?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
