How is vapor pressure affected by the strength of intermolecular attraction in a liquid?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

can you provide a definition (preferably in your own words) for what vapour pressure is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pressure that is exerted by a vapor in equilibrium with a liquid

OpenStudy (aaronq):

so if you increase the attraction between molecules at the surface, will more or less molecules tend to enter the gas phase?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

less. I think

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah, less molecules will tend to enter the gas phase (because they're held tighter to one another) as a result less molecules are in the gas phase and the vapour pressure is lower.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok. Thanks!

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem !
