Write the equation of the function graphed. A. f(x) = |x + 4| B. f(x) = |x – 4| C. f(x) = |x| – 4 D. f(x) = |x| + 4
It's an absolute value function moved 4 units to the left. The general equation for these translations and stretches/compressions is: \[f(x) = af[k(x-d)]+c\] The d value is for horizontal translations. Then this value is negative, the translation is to the right and to the left when positive.
The k and d values are written INSIDE THE FUNCTION--if that helps at all. =)
Oh, okay.. so are C. and D. out, then?
Correct, because those show vertical translations of 4 up and 4 down.
Oh, okay. Would it be B. then?
B is 4 units to the right. ^^ You want to the left.
Oh... oops. So then, by process of elimination, the answer is A.
Thank you! :)
