A spherical meteorite lies half exposed in the earth. The diameter of the meteorite is 14 inches. What is the surface area of the exposed surface? Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

So the diameter of the meteorite is 14 inches, but only half of that is exposed. 14/2=7. 7 is now the radius of the meteorite. Do you know the equation for the surface area of a sphere?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4*pi*r^2

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Good. Now plug in the values. And tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

307.72?

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Not exactly. Did you multiply 7*2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i did 7*7 to get 49. then i multiplied 49*4 to get 196. then divided it by two because you are supposed to find half of the surface area because it is the surface area exposed. then multiplied it by pi

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

What about the pie sign?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that it is the last thing i wrote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 98*3.14

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

I got 307.72

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what i got

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Do you have any answer choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no sorry

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Then your answer is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have another question, would you mind helping me?

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Sure

Caitlyn made a teepee for a class project. Her teepee has a diameter of 6 feet. The angle the side of the teepee made with the ground was 65 degrees. What was the volume of the teepee? Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

Ok, so what would you call the teepee? Prism/ Cylinder or Pyramid/ Cone?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a cone

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

ok so the equation for a cone is V \[V=\frac{ 4 }{ 3 }\pi r ^{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

I'm sorry that is the wrong equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 1/3pir^2h

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

A cone would be: \[V=\frac{ 1 }{ 3 } Bh\] yeah. So now plug in values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldn't a cone be \[1/3pir^2h\]

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

No that is for the surface area of a cone. And what we're looking for is the volume of the teepee.

OpenStudy (vampirediaries):

I mean cylinder for the equation you wrote. So the 65 degree angle would be, I believe, the base and the height is the 6 ft.
