An asymptote is what x cannot equal.

So in this equation (or any fraction one) x cannot equal zero. Zero can never be in the denominator because anything over 0 is undefined. You cannot divide by 0.

So in this question we know that there is an asymptote at x=5 because x cannot equal 5. 1/5-5 =1/0 and we cannot have a 0 in the denominator.

Another way to do it is by setting the denominator up like this and solving for it: |dw:1402360544882:dw|
